Parents,
The students have a math assignment on pg.571 on quadrilaterals. They must write all the names that the polygon could be. For example, if the polygon has at least 1 pair of parallel sides, it could be a trapezoid. If the shape has 2 pairs of parallel sides, it could also be a parallelogram. If it doesn't have right corners, it could not be a square or rectangle, and so on.
Have a good night.

Update 2/27/2017
Parents,
The students have to complete a math worksheet on the types of quadrilaterals. They need to identify each polygon with the type - quadrilateral, square, rectangle, trapezoid, rhombus, or parallelogram. Then they have to write why they chose that type. For example, for square, they might write: has 4 right angles, 2 sets of parallel lines, or 4 sides of the same length.
Later in the week, we will be learning about flips, slides, and turns, along with lines of symmetry. In reading, we are studying fact and opinion with a biography on James Thorpe. They are working on poetry in writing. We are studying government in social studies for the next few weeks.
Reminder
- Progress reports will go home tomorrow.
- No school on Friday for students due to conferences.
If you would like to discuss anything with your child, please email us to schedule a conference time on Friday.
Have a great week.

Update 2/23/2017
Parents,
The students have pg.559-560 in their math book to complete on classifying triangles by the size of their angle. It is two pages since both pages are very short.
Reminder that the STEAM Fair is today at JPS from 5:00 - 7:00.
Have a great night.

Update 2/21/2017
Parents,
The students have homework on angles on pg. 553 in their math book.
In reading we are still looking at cause and effect within a reading passage using text based evidence. In writing, the students will be studying poetry and hopefully performing their own poetry slam by the end of the unit. In math, we are continuing to study geometry, specifically angles, classifying triangles by the size of their angle, and finishing the week by sorting and classifying quadrilaterals. We are still building simple circuits along with series and parallel circuits in science.
Reminders:
- Box Tops are due this Thursday
- STEM Carnival this Thursday at JPS from 5:00 - 7:00
- Read Across America next week
Have a great week.

Update 2/13/2017
Parents,
There is no homework tonight since we had the math test on fractions today.
This week in reading, we will be working on cause and effect where students will be making their own comic strip using that strategy along with the transition words. In writing, students will be finishing their fictional narrative. It is due this Friday. In math, we are beginning a new chapter on geometry where we will be learning about points, lines, line segments, parallel lines, intersecting lines, and perpendicular lines. They will be demonstrating this on their own geometry town. In science, we are starting a new unit on electricity. They will be able to demonstrate a functioning circuit along with a series and parallel circuit.
Reminder that our field trip is tomorrow. Please make sure your child has a disposable packed lunch if you signed on the permission slip for them to bring a lunch.
Reminder that this week is the book fair and students are welcome to purchase books. Family night is this Thursday from 5:00 - 7:00.
Students are welcome to participate in exchanging Valentine cards and candy tomorrow when we return from the field trip. The class list went home last week.
Have a great week.

Update 2/9/2017
Parents,
Students have math homework where they have to complete two problems on pg.445 in their math book. They must use the UPSE sheet we provided for them to complete the problems. It stands for Understand the problem (write down the important information from the problem), Plan (what operation and strategy will you use), Solve (work out the problem), and Explain (write down your answer and how you got it).
Have a good night.

Update 2/8/2017
Parents,
Students have math homework tonight. It is review on math skills that are covered this year. We will be assigning math homework for the next four or five Wednesdays along with the normal Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights.
We had scheduled the math test for this Friday but that has been changed due to not being able to teach yesterday's math lesson because of NAEP testing. Due to the field trip on Tuesday, we may push the assessment back to next Thursday.
Have a great night.

Daily Update 2/6/2017
Hi Parents,
Welcome me back to another week of 4th grade! Tonight's homework is page 433 in the textbook. Students are expected to be able to subtract mixed numbers using regroupsing. We went over several different strategies for this, so please be sure and check the ThinkCentral website for help if you need it.
This week, we will continuing working with fractions and will have a test on Friday. We are also continuing to work on writing and publishing our fictional narratives, and in grammar, we're practicing using context clues to determine the meanings of multiple meaning words. In reading, our focus skill is compare and contrast.
Finally, please don't forget about a field trip on February 14. If you haven't yet sent in your permission slip, those are due ASAP. Also, we will have time to exchange valentines that day, Class lists were sent out this afternoon; of course, exchanging valentines is voluntary.
Have a wonderful evening!

Update 2/1/2017
Parents,
We understand that the students have four days off in a row. However, we did some math review today on adding and subtracting money amounts using decimals and three digit by one digit multiplication and two digit by two digit multiplication practice. Students had plenty of time to finish the assignment but some students did not finish and were told to take it home and finish for homework. Thank you and have a great weekend.
