Parents,
The students do have homework tonight on pg.219 in their math book. They will have to work it around all the Treat-or-Treating. We are still working on division and feel it is important for students to get practice on it. If they know their multiplication facts, the homework tonight should be completed somewhat quickly. For example, a problem on tonight's homework could look like: 1,600/4. They can ignore the zeros for a second and figure out how many multiples of 4 go into 16 or 4 X ___ = 16. When they figure out that it is 4 then they need to add the zeros to it to get 400. They should check it mentally or on paper, as well. 4 X 400 = 16 + 2 zeros is equal to the original dividend of 1,600. So it checks.
We will continue the week looking at division using compatible numbers and using the distributive property.
In reading, we are reviewing text features, new vocabulary, and comprehension with the story called, Antarctic Journal, which is written as a daily journal on the author's experience in Antarctica.
In writing, students will be introduced to persuasive writing later in the week. They are exploring adjectives and were introduced to the November Nifty-Fifty-Thrifty words.
In social studies, students will be working on a Native American research project.
Reminder: If you have not confirmed your child's conference time for this Friday, please let us know if you are able to come during your scheduled time. The times were posted on this blog last Friday so you can check your child's time there.
Thank you and have a great week.

Update 10/25/2016
Parents,
The students have math homework on lesson 4.3 on division on pg. 213. They should be using the normal algorithm that was taught to us as students. We told them some acronyms to help them remember the steps. The steps are Divide, Multiply, Subtract, and Bring up/down. They can also use Does McDonald's Serve Burgers and Daddy, Mommy, Sister, Brother to help them remember the letters D, M, S, and B.
Reminder there is no school this Thursday and Friday due to teacher professional development.
We have noticed that many students are having difficulty remembering their multiplication facts. This is essential in division. We ask that you have your child practice their multiplication facts.
Have a good night.

Update 10/24/2016
Parents,
There is no math homework today due to the chapter 3 test.
I want to remind you that there is no school for students this Thursday and Friday due to teacher professional development days.
In language arts, students are learning about text features. They are reviewing last week's vocabulary words and had a quiz today on October words.
In math we are starting chapter 4 on dividing by 1-digit numbers.
In social studies, they are learning about Native American tribes and culture in the different regions of the United States.
Have a great week.

Update 10/21/2016
Parents,
I just wanted to remind you that we are having the chapter 3 math test on Monday. Students did some review problems in their math book today in preparation for the test. I told them they could prepare more for it by doing the odd numbers on pg.189-194 if they desired.
Have a great weekend.

Update 10/20/2016
Parents,
The students have to complete pg. 187 in their math book on problem solving. It is a two-step method where they will have to multiply two sets of numbers and then subtract or add depending on what the problem is asking.
Reminder that the Fall Festival is from 4:00 - 6:00 tomorrow.
Reminder that box tops are due tomorrow.
Have a good night.

Update 10/18/2016
Parents,
Students have math homework on pg. 181 which is more multiplication problems for them to solve. They can use any of the three methods we have taught them to solve the problems. They can use Area Model Boxes, Partial Product, or Multiplying With Regrouping. The Multiplying With Regrouping is the original algorithm that you learned when you were a child. They can pick the strategy that is most comfortable for them. I have found many students like the Area Model Boxes.
This is a reminder that pictures are this Thursday.

Have a great night.
