Update 11/17/15

Parents,

Students have to complete a math worksheet that has problems on both sides of the worksheet we gave them. They were told multiple times to take home today's problem set that they completed in class today since it would assist them in tonight's homework.
If there is still some confusion, I will explain a few of the problems on the homework. For the first problem, they are asked to answer 10 times 4 thousands. Students should label the column headings and then draw 4 dots under the thousands column to represent the 4 thousand. Then they are asked to multiply this by 10. To show the multiplication of ten, students will draw a bundle of 10 dots under the first dot, a bundle of 10 dots under the second dot, third, and fourth. This now shows 4 thousand times 10 is equal to 40 thousand. Now students will draw an arrow from each bundle over to the ten thousands column and draw 4 dots. This shows that 4 ten thousands is equal to 40 thousand. For division, they would use the same process but they would move to the right column in the place value chart. This is because when you divide by 10 you are getting a smaller number.
Problem 2 says 10 times 3 tens. So students would figure out what 10 times 3 is. They would say it is 30 tens and write it below the "unit form" column. Then under the "standard form" column, students would write the numerical value which is 300 since 30 tens is equal to 300.
For problem 3, the problem says (2 tens, 1 one) times 10. The "unit form" would have students move to the left on the place value chart since we are multiplying. So the student would write 2 hundreds, 1 ten since it is multiplied by 10. Under the "standard form" heading, students would then write the value of 2 hundreds and 1 ten is 210. We have also told students to check their answer; if they are multiplying by 10 they add a zero and if they divide by 10, they remove a zero. I hope this helped.

They should continue to read every night for at least 20 minutes and their reading response is due on Friday. If you don't know what it is, look at the tab on this blog under "reader response."

Thank you and have a great night.
