Update 3/27

Hi Parents!

This week in math, we are working on finding the measure of angles that are separated into smaller parts.  We are also continuing to work toward mastering how to use a protractor to draw and measure angles.  Tonight, students should complete page 625 in their textbooks.  They've been given protractors to use; please make sure those protractors return to school!

In reading, students are reading an article about bullying and will be practicing answering text-dependent questions and finding evidence to support answers in the text.  They will also practice analyzing some of the vocabulary words they encounter in the story.  In writing, we're continuing to work on our poetry anthology project.

Finally, we've kicked off our "Zombie" PBL project, so be sure to ask your child to explain what he or she will be working on for the next couple of months!  This project will address most of our Social Studies standards, as well as many reading and writing ones.  We will continue to have Science lessons; students are finishing up a final project in the electricity unit and then will move on to working with properties of light.

Please don't forget that students are out of school on March 31 for a teacher work day.  This is the last week of quarter 3, and report cards will be sent home NEXT week.

Have a great evening!

Parents,

The students have to complete a problem set on the lesson we covered today that consists of ten questions on relating degrees to fractional parts of a circle. They should have brought home the circle protractor and the work we did in class to help them complete it.

Thank you and have a good night.

Update 3/20

Hi Parents!

This week in math, we're starting a new chapter focusing on angles and angle measurements.  Tonight's homework is page 605; students need to be able to identify fractional parts of a circle.

In reading, students are working on non-fiction reading and informational reading skills. Students are working on answering questions with text-based evidence and on responding to what they read with text-based support for their opinions.

In writing, students are working on creating a poetry anthology.  Our focus is on using good descriptive word choices to express ourselves in our writing and to practice responding to the poetry they read.  We hope to have a poetry SLAM performance sometime around spring break!

In Science, students are finishing up their study of electricity by creating their own review game. They'll be starting tomorrow--be sure to ask your child how he/she is designing the game :-)

Please don't forget the following upcoming events:

3/22: Jump Rope for Heart
3/23: Coffee Chat with the Special Education ISS, @ CSO from 9:30-11:00am
3/29: CCRSM K-5 Parent Training, @ HES Lab D from 12:00-1:00pm
3/31: Staff workday / no school for students

Have a great evening!

Update 3/7

Hi Parents!

Today in math, we continued working in our Geometry unit.  Students learned about lines of symmetry and about "flips," "turns," and "slides."  Homework tonight is page 579 in the textbook.  In class, students are still working on their Geometry Town project; be sure and ask your child how his/her project is coming along!

In reading, our current skill focus is differentiating between fact and opinion.  This can make for some great discussion as you watch TV or shop together!  In writing, students are learning all about analyzing and responding to poetry.  Students will soon be writing their own poetry and will be compiling their own poetry anthology!

In Social Studies, we're wrapping up a discussion of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights this week.  Today we discussed the rights we have as citizens and had some very interesting discussions.  We may have a few budding lawyers in the group :-)

Please keep in mind that Terra Nova testing will be held next week.  If at all possible, please try not to schedule any appointments or avoidable absences during the morning hours next week. Students should just come to school on time, well-rested, with a full belly :-)

Thanks so much for all your support!  Have a great evening!
