Daily Update 4/24

Hi Parents!  This week in 4th grade:

**We're finishing up Chapter 8 and will be having a test on Wednesday.  Students will bring home a review for tomorrow.  Please be sure to go over that homework to help them to be ready for the test.  For today, the homework is in section 8.5.  Students are expected to use the UPSE model to solve the problems.

**In reading, students are working on drawing conclusions, making inferences, and answering text-dependent questions in a non-fiction selection.  Students should also be reading a book of their choice nightly.

**In Writing, we are (finally!) creating our poetry anthology books.  Once students have finished that, they'll select one of their original poems to present to the class. You child will be expected to memorize his/her poem and present it with expression--google "Kids Poetry Slam" for examples. We can't wait to hear them present their work!!

**In Social Studies, we're doing a brief overview of the Civil War.  We has some great discussions today about events leading up this war, and later, we'll talk about how the country was forever changed by this event.

**We are going on a study trip on Thursday!  Please don't forget to send a sack lunch, unless you were one of the few who ordered one from the cafeteria.  We will be outside all day, so make sure your child dresses appropriately for the weather, including sunscreen!

Thanks so much for your support!

Daily Update 4/17

Hi Parents!  We hope you had a fantastic spring break and are excited to be back at school for the 4th quarter.  8 more weeks to go!

This week in math, we're beginning a new chapter focusing on multiplying fractions.  Tonight's homework is page 459.  If your child is having trouble, please encourage them to log in to "Think Central" and watch the video for 8.1.

In Language Arts, students are getting to the final stages of producing their poetry anthologies.  We hope to wrap them up this week and to have students presenting within the next week or so.  We are also continuing to work on our research skills via our Zombie PBL project. Please ask your child to explain the project and let you know his or her progress.

Finally, this week is STEAM week, so we're working on an electrical engineering project designed to encourage students to think creatively, allow them to practice persistence, and to give them the opportunity to apply what they've learned about electricity to a real-world problem.  We began by gathering background information today, and students will plan and build their projects throughout the week.

Don't forget the following upcoming events:

4/18: Spirit Night at Wendy’s on base, 5:00-8:00pm
4/20: Static Display Night, 4:30-6:30pm
4/27: Coffee Chat with Special Education ISS, DFO Training Room, 9:30-11:00am
4/27: Parent Performance for Multi-age 6:00 pm
4/28: CCR Staff Development Day – No School for Students

Have a great evening!

Daily Update 4/6

Hi Parents!

As we close in on Spring Break, we're finishing up some things in 4th grade.  We wrapped up our chapter focusing on angles with a test today, and we'll be moving on to fractions after the break.  In Writing, students are expected to finish publishing the 5 required poems in their anthologies, and will be writing response paragraphs after the break.  In Science, we've finished our study of electricity and will be working with Space Science when we return to school, and in Social Studies, we'll be taking a brief look at the Civil War's affect on the Southeast region before we move on to Westward Expansion.

Thanks to all the parents who came out to watch our students perform today.  The kids had a great time and really enjoyed showing off their skills.  Please remember our Autism Walk tomorrow; students are invited to wear a shirt in any color blue to show their support for Autism Acceptance.

Finally, since today was a test day, and we won't be starting a new topic until after Spring Break, there is no homework tonight. We hope you enjoy your evening together!

Update 4/3

Hi Parents!  Welcome to the 4th quarter!  Can you believe the year is already 75%  over?  That doesn't mean we're quite ready to wind things down in the classroom, though.

This week in math, we're reviewing chapter 11 and will be having a test on Thursday.  Tonight's homework is part of our review:  page 632.  If you want more, ask your child to explain how to use fractional parts of a circle to figure out the measure of the angle of that fractional part.  For example:  how many degrees is an angle that represents 1/3 of a circle?

In Language Arts, we're still working on publishing our poetry anthologies.  My hope is that we'll be able to perform in our own 4th grade poetry slam by the end of April!  In reading this week, students are working on finding the main idea of a non-fiction passage and answering text-dependent questions.  Students are also practicing their skills in responding to a prompt based on something they've read.

We won't be doing much Social Studies and Science this week, since this week is our 4th grade performance.  Come on out on Thursday at 2:00 to watch our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders perform!

Have a great evening, and please let us know if you have any questions!
