Daily Update 5/1

Hi Parents!  Welcome to May :-)

This week in 4th Grade, we are beginning the novel study that will wrap up our 4th grade reading instruction.  Students will be choosing a book and will read and discuss the book with their groups throughout this month.

In writing, we are finishing up with our Poetry Anthology (finally!).  We plan to have students present their poems "Poetry Slam" style on Thursday and Friday from 10:00--10:45.  Several parents have asked if they can come in and watch and, of course, we always welcome parents in our classroom.  Students will sign up for either Thursday or Friday tomorrow, so if you'd like to come in, please ask your child which day he/she selected.

In math, students are working on representing fractions as decimals to the tenths and hundredths place.  As a part of this math chapter, students will be working on a project based on the book "If American Were a Village," which gives a variety of demographics about the U.S. population.  We'll be representing our data in fraction and decimal form, creating graphs from our data, and interpreting data by answering questions.  Since we've just begun our project, tonight's homework is page 460, which is a review of previous concepts.

Finally, in Social Studies, we're still working on historical events from the U.S.  Currently, we're talking about the Civil War, and later the week, we hope to be able to move on to Westward Expansion.  If you and your child want a preview, try out the online version of the classic Oregon Trail.

Important Upcoming Events:

5/12: Last day for GOTR Pet Supply Drive
5/15: Muffins with Mom (before school)
5/15-5/19: Book Fair BOGO
5/29: Memorial Day Holiday – no school

Have a great evening!
